Tristany Mundu on Julianknxx: ‘But I feel that he [Julian] wants to work on a common heritage and a European diasporic experience.’

In 2023, Tristany Mundu guided Julianknxx through the areas of the Sintra rail corridor and the South Bank [Margem Sul]. This meeting between artists and African diaspora communities in Portugal gave rise to the exhibition ‘Julianknxx. Chorus in Rememory of Flight’.

BANTUMEN at Gulbenkian

Between alleyways and outskirts, multidisciplinary artist Tristany led Julianknxx – a fellow artist from Sierra Leone now based in the UK – through a Portugal that beats beyond the picture-postcard view. Not just Lisbon, but the soul of the surrounding cities – Sintra, Sacavém, the South Bank – where culture thrives away from the spotlight.

More than just a journey, it was an immersion into the essence of barbershops, community centres, restaurants where every dish tells the story of intertwined diasporas. Music, food, language – everything resonated as echoes of shared heritage. In the midst of encounters and reflections, they spoke of exploration and survival, identity and power. Ultimately, it was a search for belonging, without masks or pretence.
