New CAM: Architecture and Nature
After more than four years of renovations, the new Centro de Arte Moderna and the southern extension of the Gulbenkian Garden opened their doors on September 21, 2024.
While dozens of century-old trees and shrubs were cared for and restored, and nearly 50 new plant species were introduced to the soil, CAM’s building underwent profound renovations. CAM gained over 900 square meters of additional exhibition space, new open views, and an intermediate space connecting the garden and the building – an ‘Engawa’, or ‘in-between space’, as the Japanese architect behind the project, Kengo Kuma, describes it.
Throughout these four years, the extensive renovations, architectural transformations, and installation of new physical and material resources were meticulously documented. We invite you to explore the before and after, narrated firsthand by some of the key figures involved in the project.
