The untold stories of the African diaspora by Julianknxx
Julianknxx tells us about his time in various European port cities and the untold stories of the African diaspora that he encountered there – collected in the form of songs, poems and conversations.
Lisbon was one of those stops and became a chapter that includes an archive of the city’s realities, marked, among others, and above all, by the sentence – and work – ‘Learning How to Wear Black Under the Sun’.
The artist discusses how this title arose from an encounter with the musician Oseias Xavier, who appeared fully dressed in black under the hot Lisbon sun. For the musician, the colour black in clothing can be considered versatile, but it has a deeper meaning: a Black person in Lisbon has to think of themselves as Black and also consider the colours they wear and how they present themselves.
