This poetic journey is guided by Anna Mariani herself, voiced by Regina Casé, and testimonials and texts by figures such as Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Lina Bo Bardi, Ariano Suassuna, and Jean Baudrillard.
A selection of photographs from the series Pinturas e platibandas, which depicts the popular architecture of the Brazilian hinterland, is featured in the exhibition complexo brasil. The documentary articulates this visual work with the voices of characters who are also very vocal in the exhibition, such as Caetano Veloso and Lina Bo Bardi, offering a poetic immersion in the popular culture of the northeast of the country.
This event is part of the complementary programme for the exhibition complexo brasil, curated by José Miguel Wisnik, Guilherme Wisnik and Milena Britto.

Anna Mariani
Raised between Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Anna Mariani studied at Em Foco, a school in São Paulo that was a hub for innovation in Brazilian photography. She began by portraying women’s work in traditional cultures in the Recôncavo Baiano region. On her forays into the sertão, using photography as a travel journal, Mariani was enchanted by the façades of the houses and their infinite variations in colour and ornamentation. The result of ten years of work, the series Pinturas e Platibandas was exhibited for the first time at the 19th São Paulo Biennial in 1987. A few years later, she would compile the 35 mm photographs of the mountains and valleys of the northeastern hinterland, taken over three decades, in the book-essay Paisagens, impressões – O semi-árido brasileiro.
