Drawing on autobiographical inspiration, this episode of the series ‘Novas Narrativas de Caça’ provides a forum for a conversation about roots and belonging between the author and director Cláudia Semedo, the actor Daniel Martinho and the activist Yussef Gomes.

Cíntia, the main character in Codé, is determined to reconnect with her roots and her family’s history. Tired of trying to persuade her father to return to his native Guinea, she decides to set off alone to discover her origins and the past that her father seems to want to forget.

How many people feel this way, out of place? How many feel they belong nowhere, and spend their lives searching for answers? How many try to reach the land where their parents were born? And do these places still exist, or are they now nothing more than a distant fantasy?

In this conversation, screenwriter and director Cláudia Semedo shares her experience, similar to Cíntia’s: the daughter of a Guinean father, she longed to discover her origins, to find out if the Guinea of her imagination actually existed. Yussef Gomes, a Guinean activist living in Portugal, offers us the perspective of someone born there but living abroad. Joining the conversation is Daniel Martinho, an Angolan actor who plays the role of Cíntia’s father (inspired by Cláudia Semedo’s father), who brings the experience of a country first at war in a colonial conflict and then in a civil war. The talk will be moderated by Vitor Belanciano.

About the series

Novas Narrativas de Caça is an anthology comprising seven independent stories, linked by their theme – the search for identity and belonging among Black characters, Portuguese people of African descent who struggle to find their place in a society that often ignores and oppresses them. “Until lions tell their own stories, hunters will always be the heroes of the hunting narratives.”
