Are there outcomes that skin colour makes predictable, inevitable?
The son of Cape Verdean parents, Nuno, the main character in this episode, has always had a ‘Portuguese upbringing’. When he attends a private party in a social housing estate in Sintra for the first time, he is confronted with the colour of his skin and the structural prejudices that inevitably come with it.
The talk that follows the screening of the episode brings together Fábio Silva, the director who drew on his own experiences to write the episode; Pedro Lopes, the actor who brought Nuno to life and whose own experiences helped him shape the character; and Telma Tvon, rapper and author of the book Um Preto Muito Português, the theme of which is similar to the narrative of this episode. The talk will be moderated by Vitor Belanciano.
About the series
Novas Narrativas de Caça is an anthology comprising seven independent stories, linked by their theme – the search for identity and belonging among Black characters, Portuguese people of African descent who struggle to find their place in a society that often ignores and oppresses them. “Until lions tell their own stories, hunters will always be the heroes of the hunting narratives.”
