The “chill in the belly” of the circus performer
“I like the circus, it’s my passion”, says Rui Areal, one of the participants in the “Panorama” project. The fear of falling off the lyre almost made him give up, but his teacher insisted: “You’re not going to give up, you’re going to carry on. This project is for you”.
Bringing together three areas – artistic, social and training – the project has worked for two years with young people from three associations in the Vila Nova de Famalicão region. “The arts make us believe in better days, better times. They make us dream and give wings to our imagination, and they also take us away from the difficulties of everyday life”, says Lueli Campos, Panorama’s social director.
As for Juliana Moura, who is responsible for the artistic direction, what moves her is “that moment of the chill in the belly, or of overcoming, when the circus artist appears”. And that moment, that risk, can be different for everyone.
Between 2022 and 2024, Panorama provided young people and adults with various types of disabilities with technical and artistic development divided into five phases, which included involvement in technical, theoretical and practical activities, participation in an artistic research laboratory, public presentation of performances and shows, participation in round tables and publication of scientific articles.
