Studio Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianOutros Bairros [Other Neighbourhoods], dated 1998, directed by Kiluanje Liberdade, Inês Gonçalves and Vasco Pimentel, and produced by Filmes do Tejo, is a portrait of the young inhabitants of the clandestine neighbourhoods of Greater Lisbon and the autonomous culture that emerged there, and which is still alive and kicking today, even if in other places.
Following the projection, Kiluanje Liberdade, one of the film’s directors, and Nael D’Almeida, a researcher and curator at the FONTE platform and a member of the Vida Justa movement, will talk about the housing issues that seem to keep resurfacing. Do we need to recover the memories of the people who lived in these neighbourhoods in the 1990s? Has rehousing destroyed or reinvented the sense of belonging? Do memories, and records like the one in this film, serve as material for the reinvention of pride and thus the ongoing fight against social and territorial exclusion?
Film synopsis
In Lisbon's peripheral neighbourhoods – Pedreira dos Húngaros, Fontaínhas, Cova da Moura, Monte da Caparica, Arrentela, etc –, there is a new cultural phenomenon led by teenagers of African origin born in Portugal. It's a genuine explosion of behaviour, largely inspired by black American cultural models, but largely using African forms of expression that are still close to them. It is this recent phenomenon of proud affirmation of ethnic identity and the richness of its forms of expression that this film is interested in documenting and questioning. A documentary that celebrates the affirmation of ethnic identity and the wealth of forms of expression of a community of teenagers with families of African origin and born in Portugal.
'Re/surgir’ film cycle
The hustle and bustle of the neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Lisbon, the frenzy of a culture on the rise in the 1980s, the imminent upheaval of a story in a land that is shaking: the ‘Re/surgir’ [Re/emerge] film series features three films that give rise to conversations that don't leave the present day behind. Themes that keep resurfacing and are worth looking at through the cinema.
From the ghettos of Greater Lisbon at the end of the 1990s, in the first session with Outros Bairros [Other Neighbourhoods], we go back in time to the South Bronx where the fictional Beat Street faithfully portrays the emergence of Hip Hop culture. And finally, in the third session, we follow in Hanami the story and growth of Nana on the magical island of Fogo in Cape Verde.
