Location
Room 1 Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationIn their music and in their lives, Jimmy P and Yen Sung bring the multiplicity of belongings, rhythms and emotions that inhabit those who live between the margins. In this conversation we talk about sound as an emotional archive, as a tool of resistance and as a compass for communities learning to dance over the abyss. What identities are strengthened by the beats? What struggles and affections are amplified when sound overflows borders?
About the cycle of talks
Following a programming logic more geared towards the Hip Hop movement, a counter-culture movement that was born as an expression of the dissatisfaction, rebellion and contestation of peripheral bodies, and taking into account the most recent events that have brought the discussion about the right to dignity and housing into the public sphere, this series of talks was conceived by Cláudia Semedo as a place for intervention by the new builders of an idea of community that breaks with the stigma placed on the Neighbourhoods and their People.

Jimmy P
Alter-ego of Joel Plácido, he was born in Barreiro, but his life is linked to Angola (where his parents were born), Paris (where he lived as a teenager) and Porto (where he put down roots and took his first steps into the world of performing arts). His taste for rap and the influence of other musical styles sparked his appetite for music. In 2013 he released his first album #1, which was the basis for a tour that took him across the country from north to south and the islands. Several albums followed, the most recent in 2023.

Yen Sung
Resident at the iconic Lux Frágil club and an inspiring female artist, she is known as a pioneer in the Portuguese electronic music scene and a vital presence on the Lisbon House scene. Yen is known for her distinctive musical style and eclectic sound, and although at the time she started it was not yet common for women to command the dance floor behind the decks, Yen Sung has become a symbol of fierce determination and undeniable taste for a new generation of Lisbon clubbers and DJs.
