As células de organismos multicelulares cooperam para garantir o desenvolvimento e a manutenção do corpo ao longo da vida. Fazem-no de uma forma coletiva sem uma estratégia formada.
O grupo de investigação de Biologia quantitativa do organismo estuda os mecanismos multiníveis que dão origem as propriedades de todo o organismo, na procura de princípios gerais de organização biológica e, eventualmente, no design de sistemas artificiais.
