There Will Be Elections, by Cláudia Varejão
On 25 April 1975, the first free elections took place in Portugal. For the first time, the adult population exercised its right to vote in a democratic process.
Around 92% of registered voters went to the polls – a turnout that has never been surpassed to this day.
The vote counting centre was set up at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, while television broadcast the count live.
This film revisits the elections through footage recorded on the night and testimonies from those who experienced this historic moment.
Held as part of the exhibition There Will Be Elections. 1975: The First Free Elections in Portugal, an initiative of the Comissão Comemorativa dos 50 anos do 25 de Abril, in partnership with the Portuguese Parliament and supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and RTP.
