Emerald

International PhD Programme for Medical Doctors

This International PhD Programme for Medical Doctors will train and nurture physician-scientists. Emerald will recruit 24 medical doctors to carry out a PhD in cutting-edge research in European centres of excellence in life sciences and biomedicine.

The project is coordinated by the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona and brings together 8 research institutes, including Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, and 37 partner organizations across 10 European countries.

The project aims to push forward personalised medicine by fusing fundamental discoveries and frontier technologies with translational research and medicine. It envisions a healthcare and medical system with highly skilled professionals who can bridge research and patients’ needs, understand different professional cultures, and can work at the interface of diverse disciplines.

The programme will train 24 physician-scientists to become leaders in academia, the clinic, or the private sector, while ideally also transforming them into ambassadors of this innovative training.
