As part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Instituto Gulbenkian Ciência was set up as an extra-university research center in 1961. In 1985, became an institute exclusively dedicated to postgraduate research and training in biological sciences. Since its foundation IGC has played a crucial role in research in Portugal and abroad.
