Red Square Lisbon Book FairOriginally published in 1759, The Theory of Moral Sentiments is considered, from a philosophical point of view, Adam Smith’s masterpiece.
In this work, the Scotish philosopher and economist presents coins the term ‘imparcial spectator’ and defends that our sense of right and wrong is not dictated by strict rules, but comes from our capability of adopting other people’s perspectives.
Published for the first time in European Portuguese, the book is now part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s collection of Classical Texts, joining another of Adam Smith’s seminal works The Wealth of Nations (vols. I e II).
Essayist and Philosophy professor António de Castro Caeiro and translator Ivone Moreira will debate this book at the Lisbon Book Fair, in a talk moderated by Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins.
