Talk with Carmen Soares and José Pedro Serra about The Republic, by Plato, moderated by Paulo Pires do Vale, marking the 55th aniversary of the first edition of Maria Helena Rocha Pereira’s translation.

Written by Greek philosopher Plato in the 4th century BC, The Republic is one of the fundamental works of political and philosophical thought.

Presented as a dialogue between Socrates and several other characters, the work explores themes such as justice, order and the ideal city-state.

On the 55th anniversary of Maria Helena Rocha Pereira’s Portuguese translation, completed in 1971 and published the following year by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which has now been reprinted 18 times, Classical Studies lecturers Carmen Soares and José Pedro Serra will be at the Book Fair to present the latest reprint, in a discussion moderated by philosopher and curator Paulo Pires do Vale.
