Film cycle Africanities and Their Human Landscapes

Event Slider

The film cycle Africanities and Their Human Landscapes brings to the Summer Garden a selection of nine fiction films, divided into three sessions.

The first session of this cycle brings together productions from the last five years that showcase the diversity of black cinema made in Portugal. The five films reveal images that have been systematically made invisible by mainstream productions, due to the reiteration of racist interpretations of colonised countries.

This set of works manages to break with this tradition by presenting these images to an audience unaccustomed to films produced by people who question the official narratives about colonisation.

The session will be introduced by Vânia Luz and moderated by Maíra Zenun.

The film cycle Africanities and Their Human Landscapes gathers a selection of nine fiction, documentary and experimental films, including shorts and features, presenting the public with a relevant overview of recent productions.

The works are part of a production that flourished with the race pictures in the United States and the struggles for independence in Africa, between the 1950s and 1970s, and has continued to grow and improve, always focused on the vision of black people.

In the summer of 2024, a year that celebrated dates as important as the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April and the 100th anniversary of Amílcar Cabral's birth, we're going to unveil these stories, listen to their versions of time and let ourselves be carried away by the poetics that make up this black cinematography, which is increasingly interesting, plural, powerful and potent.

This cycle makes visible what can no longer be hidden: that Europe is diverse, made up of people from various cultures, creeds and backgrounds, people who, on a daily basis, make up the foundations and pillars of our society.

Manchê Bom (2021)

Petra.Preta
I'll repeat myself: to be on the margin is to be part of a whole that doesn't recognise you as part of the main body. It involves a repetitive crossing from the outside to the inside. And with entering comes the obligation to leave. From there to here, resisting violence. From here to there, resisting violence. Tabanka was a proposal for a safe and changeable space, between protection and healing. And this is a way to get there. A map in reverse, where treasures are returned. Because this is about reversing paths and trying to reclaim the space of the dream.
*A note to remind you that rest is also a measure of freedom.

A son discovers his father's old 8mm tapes. And, for the first time, he sees footage from before his birth, from his childhood and adolescence. When he sees them, he returns to the house where he grew up and begins an investigation into his parents, trying to understand the trauma he has experienced all his life.
Duration: 19'55''

Velveteen (2022)

David J. Amado
The desire to be seen and accepted as we really are is one of the deepest human desires and is the central theme of the dance film Velveteen. Inspired by the book The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams, Velveteen chronicles the journey of a queer black man from self-hatred and repression to self-discovery and acceptance. With dance and poetry, we accompany the protagonist as he navigates ancestral traumas, racism and homophobia in order to heal, find community and live an authentic life, free from the expectations of others.

Duração: 5'
