Canta conto conta

Songs, Tales and Storytelling

Those who arrive in the archipelago immediately feel a direct geographical relationship with it – an imaginary, an idealisation, an escape. But those who are Azorean or who have come to live on the island, experience so many other different relationships.

We started by contacting the people, looking for their stories and memories through objects and photographs, but also through the spoken word in general, through local expressions that at first sound a little strange but then turn out to be connected.

Based on these memories and verbal idiosyncrasies, we drew a poetic map, constructing a tale that then expanded into space through these new found objects, these new words, deconstructed by the voice and, above all, by listening to it.

The space/territory then takes on a new dimension that goes beyond stereotypical views of the island. By finding common ground between Horta, Angra do Heroísmo and Ribeira Grande, the idea is to create a three-pronged approach in which we celebrate distance and provoke a ritual of rapprochement.

The project was developed as part of ATOS, an initiative of the D. Maria II National Theatre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
