Calouste Gulbenkian Day, July 20th
Prior to the Gulbenkian Prize awards ceremony, set for 6:30, there is the chance to see how Joaquim Sapinho imagined the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum after having attentively studied the art collection and the life of Calouste. The film director is this year’s Museum’s Summer Guest and the opening is on this day at 5:30.
One hour later, the Grand Auditorium hosts the Calouste Gulbenkian Prize award ceremony, which distinguishes those individuals and organisations who have stood out internationally for their maintaining and defending human rights. This year the theme is the Freedom of Expression, Information and Press. The winner, who is chosen from a group of 36 candidates by a jury presided over by Jorge Sampaio, receives a prize worth 100,000 euros.
The Gulbenkian Cohesion, Sustainability and Knowledge Prizes, each receiving a cheque for 50,000 euros, are then delivered to the winner of the respective categories chosen from the 130 candidates received. The national jury is chaired by António Feijó and with Henrique Leitão, Miguel Tamen, João Ferrão, Teresa Mendes, Elisabete Figueiredo and António Miguel as its members.
Immediately afterwards, the Gulbenkian and the Geração Orchestras, conducted by José Eduardo Gomes, shall perform the Calouste Gulbenkian Day closing concert. Entrance is free subject to collection of a ticket and the Grand Auditorium’s seating capacity.
