Art and Community

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation values the role of the arts as a powerful means to promote change and social transformation.

The Foundation’s primary goal is to help build a cohesive society that offers equal opportunities and improves the well-being and quality of life of the most vulnerable groups. To this end, and for over a decade, the Foundation has been enhancing the role of the arts – which encourages the participation of all through its co-creation processes – as a powerful means to promote change and social transformation.

This pathway gained greater importance in 2013 with the creation of the PARTIS initiative and, in 2020, was reinforced with the launch of the PARTIS & Art for Change initiative, in partnership with the “la Caixa” Foundation, harnessing the work that both foundations have carried out in this field for several years.

To date, support has been provided to 64 art projects with social impact in several different regions in Portugal, corresponding to an investment of around €4.5 million.

With these initiatives, the Foundation aims to raise the civic role of the arts and culture in Portugal, steadfast in the belief that democratised access and the participation of all in the creation and enjoyment of the arts and culture are key to building more sustainable, cohesive and just societies.
