Art and Community

The Gulbenkian Foundation believes that the arts and its processes of artistic creation and co-creation play a fundamental role in social transformation.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation invests in artistic practices as a privileged means of experimenting with different working methodologies for the inclusion of particularly vulnerable or weak groups in our society.

We believe that the arts and its respective processes of artistic creation and co-creation, which encourage engagement and change, play a fundamental role in social transformation.

In 2013, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation launched the first competition under the PARTIS initiative to support projects that demonstrate the role the arts (audiovisual, plastic or performing arts) can play in pathways for integration and in building more just and cohesive communities. Over the course of its 3 editions, 48 projects received financing in the total amount of 3 million euros.

In 2020, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation joined forces with the ”la Caixa” Foundation to launch the PARTIS & Art for Change initiative, which expands and intensifies the work that both foundations have been carrying out in this area for several years. The new initiative has 1.5 million euros to support artistic projects with a social impact in Portugal.
