Thanks to a job offer, Jean-Louis, a Catholic engineer, moves to the city of Clermont-Ferrand, where he doesn’t know anyone. During Mass, he meets Françoise, a devout woman whom he vows to marry.
Everything changes when, on Christmas Eve, he is introduced by an old friend to Maud, a divorced woman, mother of three, who questions Jean-Louis’ convictions about marriage, fidelity and morality.
