A historic meeting between two great figures of the 20th century, director Roberto Rossellini’s interview with Salvador Allende, the first Marxist socialist to be democratically elected head of state in America, was filmed by Emidio Greco.
Allende talks about his family, his university experience in medicine and his political activity as a student, which led to his expulsion. He also describes the creation of Popular Unity, which realised his political dream: the union of working class parties.
Curator's text
Although the neo-realists, the “school” to which Rossellini belonged in the 1940s, had not only a political commitment (anti-fascist) but also a world view (sometimes Christianised “socialist realism”), the author of Rome, Open City did not like to be categorised ideologically. This does not mean that he did not have a strong commitment to reality, to the concrete, and at the same time an openness to hope, if not to miracles. The interview with Salvador Allende, a Marxist elected with the support of some progressive Christians, has an obvious element of hope, but when RAI, which bought the rights to the film, screened it, Allende had already committed suicide, his political project crushed by Pinochet's coup.
