The film follows Pascal from the age of 17 until his early death at just 39, portraying his convictions about Galilean theories, his studies derived from Torricelli’s experiments, the cult of science and his conversion to Christianity.
This film is part of a tetralogy on philosophical figures, which includes the feature films Socrates, Augustine of Hippo and Descartes, also shown in this film cycle.
Curator's text
Pascal was a genius before he was a saint (he has still not been canonised). Geometry was his speciality, but from a very young age he had such knowledge and intuition that many today recognise his name as a computer language. He was also a sick man. And a mystic. The film plays with an extraordinary ellipsis, from conversion directly to death, without ignoring the Pascal who kept the description of his visions sewn into the lining of his coat, or who made the existence of God a kind of game theory, a bet that no one can guarantee they have won or lost.
