Auditorium 3 Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationDocumentary subtitled in Portuguese. Session with interpretation in Portuguese Sign Language.
A Alegoria da Caverna is a theatre project involving deaf and hearing people, aimed at contributing to equal access to training and professionalisation for deaf actors, and at promoting the creation of new, more inclusive and diverse performance grammars.
During the two years of training the deaf actors, it became clear that a glossary of Portuguese sign language (LGP) that included actor training and direction terminology needed to be created. Thus, under the direction of Carlos Martins, a theatre LGP glossary was designed and is now available to everyone.
The project culminated in the creation and presentation of a bilingual performance that reflects on the daily lives of deaf people in Portugal and where LGP is the creative engine.
This session includes the screening of a documentary that reveals the perspective of participants on this project, and a talk with a brief presentation of the theatre LGP glossary and how it was constructed. The talk will be moderated by art critic and consultant Isabel Lucena, who will be joined by Sofia de Portugal (Artistic Director), Carlos Martins (Social Director and actor), and Patrícia Carmo and David Medeiros (actors).

Supported by the 1st edition of the PARTIS & Art for Change initiative, A Alegoria da Caverna is a theatre project involving the deaf community, aimed at bringing to Portuguese plays the experience and characteristics of deaf culture, and to create new performance grammars to promote more inclusive and diverse artistic languages.
In late 2022, it culminated with a performance to which both the deaf and the hearing had equal access and could enjoy in the same way. LGP was the creative engine of the show: a marriage between gestures and the spoken word that resulted in a fresh and new theatrical experience. More than just a bilingual performance, it focuses on and presents a performance grammar that is inclusive and for everyone.
Implemented in the area of Lisbon, the project also dignified and recognised deaf artists, giving them equal access to artistic training, and sowed the seeds for the creation of a theatre group with deaf performers for professionalisation and to find their social and cultural space.
