In 1980, the performance of the prodigious Croatian pianist Ivo Pogorelich at the Warsaw Chopin Competition was so brilliant and daring that when he failed to make the final due to his unorthodox interpretations, Martha Argerich resigned from the jury in protest. Since then, however, Pogorelich’s very personal approach to Chopin’s music has become a benchmark and has attracted the most passionate praise. In the review Chopin: Piano Works, in Gramophone, he was described as doing everything “with princely authority.”
