David Fray is a musician who explores a wealth of discursive possibilities at the piano, with wide-ranging passions capable of bringing Bach and Boulez together in a single programme (and which earned him the distinction of “disc of the year” in 2019 from The Times and Le Soir). David is now taking on the emblematic and monumental Goldberg Variations. Frequently compared to Glenn Gould for his masterful approach to Bach’s work, Fray says that they ask similar questions – how to find the right colours that do not betray the language and style of the German composer – but reach different conclusions. In his case, it is above all the search for lyricism that leads to the demand he makes of himself.
