Saco da Baixa
Discover the handmade art made by women over 55 to combat loneliness and isolation in Coimbra's city centre.
Sewing, embroidery, graphic and multimedia design, screen printing, illustration, textile design and experimental sound arts are the artistic materials that shape Saco da Baixa, a project promoted by Associação Há Baixa in Coimbra’s historic centre.
Unemployed women over the age of 55 are the artisans in this project, which seeks to showcase their knowledge and life experience and help minimise their loneliness and isolation. The project also aims at boosting relations with the surrounding community: residents, shopkeepers and even university students and tourists.
Saco da Baixa, with artistic coordination by Catarina Pires, is a project supported by the 1st edition of PARTIS & Art for Change.
