Blue Carbon: Roadmap for a voluntary market in Portugal

Raul Xavier de Oliveira

Digital edition

PDF – 17.7 MB

Published as part of the Gulbenkian Blue Carbon project, this Roadmap is intended to be the starting point for a wide-ranging discussion on how to make blue carbon ecosystem conservation and restoration projects viable. The Roadmap was published together with two supporting Scientific Reports, which assess the main blue carbon ecosystems in mainland Portugal.

“The release of the document Blue Carbon: Roadmap to a Voluntary Market in Portugal is a milestone in the development of the Gulbenkian Blue Carbon project, which allows Portugal, a maritime nation in terms of geography, history and vocation, to join the group of nations that are already adopting blue carbon strategies as part of their climate action.

The Roadmap now published identifies potential blue carbon projects and clarifies the actions needed to carry them out, starting down a path of climate action built on natural-based solutions that benefit both nature and people.”

In Foreword, by Carlos Duarte, Professor of Marine Sciences, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Global Ambassador of the Gulbenkian Blue Carbon project.
