Vida Real

There are many rituals in the ritual of routine, some based on memory, others on the future, others automatic, transparent, which no one seems to see. These transparent gestures, the routines and their interruptions, the where, when and why of our real lives are what the Vida Real project is about.

Like an Ariadne’s thread with missing pieces, we cling to each other and fill in the gaps, creating a new continuum, several new continuums, realising the most poetic thing about the game, about life.

When a group of people get together to plan their days, to create a city and a real life, what do they talk about? What do they eat? What do they dream about? Is it about the cold weather? Or about toast? What if it were about respect, water, or power? Perhaps in this mix of small and large things (simply because they all fit into an empty space), some spectator will recognise something real, something that has always existed, something human.

Like the city of Vila Real, this is a performance collage, a landscape of stratum, layers, and it’s up to each spectator to freeze moments in time, to fill in gaps, to do their part.

The project was developed as part of ATOS, an initiative of the D. Maria II National Theatre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
