Parlapatório

Parley

Parlapatório, or as they say, conversation, has the same root as parliament. It is a workshop about the need for dialogue and dissent, exploring the theatricality of an assembly or discovering the theatre in an assembly.

It’s the democracy that exists in the creative space, longed for by those who have long awaited it and those who are not yet old enough to fully exercise it. Theatre comes from playing, sharing, discovering and listening. It is about discussing, inciting and stepping on the geographies of debate and the mechanisms of political discourse through the filter of a possible theatre where we have the freedom to summon one of the many voices, natures, profiles that we have within us.

For several weeks, Cassandra’s team spent their evenings at Casa das Artes in Miranda do Corvo. Then they did the same in Alcanena. In both municipalities, they brought together two generations: young people aged between 15 and 18, and people over 65. After several weeks together, we opened the meeting to the public, to anyone who wanted to come and visit us.

Suggestions for topics to discuss and heated debates emerged from this exchange between generations, including abortion, domestic violence, drug abuse, alcohol addiction, corruption, LGBTQIA+ issues, euthanasia, animal rights and pornography.

Although nothing was rehearsed, it wasn’t all improvisation. It wasn’t a total lie, but that doesn’t mean you believed everything that was said. This gathering of speakers was a way for us to experiment with a different way of thinking.

The project was developed as part of ATOS, an initiative of the D. Maria II National Theatre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
