Ossónoba

Ossónoba is the name of the pre-Roman city that stood roughly where Faro is today. The name translates to ‘warehouse on the marsh’ (salt marsh, estuary area).

The Ossónoba odyssey began with research into the imaginaries of the Faro region over time. Heritage, nature, science, politics, tradition, industry and society, among others, were the starting points for a process of carefully studying, understanding, contemplating (were these not fundamental premises of theatre art?) and even projecting it into a possible or imagined future. What peoples have walked this land over the centuries? What about the story of a Moorish diplomat who avoided war and bloodshed and left his love reflected in a bouquet of oleander? And what about the sea? Isn’t the sea just for fishing?

Ossónoba invites you to discover and reflect on the stories and secrets of Faro’s living heritage. In between, you can watch a dance performed by boys and girls from ‘da street’.

The project was developed as part of ATOS, an initiative of the D. Maria II National Theatre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
