Observatório dos Rios

River Observatory

The River Observatory consists of a series of scenarios, short dramatizations, games and activities developed with the community that are a call to reflect on what a river is and the importance of river ecosystems.

In Ourém, the various facilities of the River Observatory were set up on the banks of the River Nabão, in the Agroal Nature Park. Activities included a camping trip, a dinner about food through the ages and a performance created in collaboration with the amateur theatre group Seiça, directed by Mafalda Cardoso Pereira.

In Santa Maria da Feira, visual and sound pieces were created in collaboration with Orquestra Criativa (Creative Orchestra), Grupo de Tricotadeiras (Knitting Group) and the Year 11 art class of the Santa Maria da Feira Secondary School. An artistic installation and a performance itinerary, developed in collaboration with the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, were presented at the Imaginarius Creation Centre. This was the starting point for the large puppet, inspired by an eel, which took the audience on a journey through the city, ending at Casa do Moinho, on the banks of the River Cáster.

In Tavira, the River Observatory was held in the Community Gardens of the Tavira Agricultural Experimental Centre (CEAT – Centro de Experimentação Agrícola de Tavira), a space for growing food, but also a place of gathering and training for this community of gardeners. The focus was on the area’s intimate relationship with the Ria Formosa lagoon. This was followed by a series of scenarios and installations, spread over five sessions, on themes related to ecology, biology, archaeology, wool and textiles in their relationship with rivers and fresh water.

The project was developed as part of ATOS, an initiative of the D. Maria II National Theatre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
