Gulbenkian Patrimony – Maria Tereza and Vasco Vilalva Award
Applications are now open for the The Gulbenkian Patrimony – Maria Tereza and Vasco Vilalva Award that annually distinguishes interventions in fixed and moveable heritage across the country with 50,000 euros.
In 2023, the prize was awarded to Chalet Ficalho in Cascais, a late 19th century building that was recently transformed into a small hotel. In previous years, the prize has been awarded to interventions in churches such as Clérigos (Porto), Santa Isabel (Lisbon) or Sé do Funchal (Madeira), museums in Caramulo and Santarém, residential buildings, a recovered old pottery in Coimbra, a historic garden partially destroyed by fire, a library, a bookshop, a cinema, a forgotten national monument in Ammaia, a 19th century sculptural ensemble and an initiative that collects, conserves and studies signs that are part of Lisbon’s urban memory.
The winner will be selected by the Board of Trustees of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, following a proposal by the Jury, composed by António Lamas (chairman), Gonçalo Byrne, Raquel Henriques da Silva, Rui Vieira Nery and Santiago Macias.
The Gulbenkian Patrimony – Maria Tereza and Vasco Vilalva Award was created by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2007, as a result of Maria Tereza Vilalva’s wish to honour her husband, Vasco Vilalva. The prize has distinguished, with a value of 50,000 euros and honourable mentions, exemplary interventions in the field of conservation, restoration, valuation or promotion of cultural heritage across the whole of Portugal.
