Aimée Zito Lema. 13 shots
Aimée Zito Lema (Amsterdam, 1982) works on individual and collective memories, in particular on the registering and transmission of events from generation to generation.
Her exhibition at the Modern Collection is entitled 13 Shots and gathers works resulting from her artistic collaboration with the Oprimido (Oppressed) Theatre Group of Lisbon, which took place in the Multipurpose Room of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. Based on the performance exercises undertaken by the artist and the group – the inter-generational transmission of the 25 April revolution and the photography archive of the ACARTE service –, questions the way in which memory gets transmitted by means of stories, images, gaps and silences that collectively get reproduced, filled and reimagined. More than a search to decode the past or a resolution of the present, the objective of the work of Aimée Zito Lema is to render visible the complexity of the processes leading to the transmission of memory, which emerge across diverse supports, images, layers and gestures, whether of conflict or socialisation.
The project presented here stems from an artistic residence in Lisbon at Rua das Gaivotas 6, which constituted one of the eight exhibition chapters created under the auspices of the 4Cs: From Conflict to Conviviality through Creativity and Culture, a European cooperation project coordinated by the Catholic University of Portugal and co-financed by the Creative Europe programme run by the European Union.
Each chapter tells its own story through the voice of each partner institution: the Catholic University of Portugal, Tensta Konsthall, SAVVY Contemporary, the Royal College of Art, the Antoni Tàpies Foundation, Vilnius Academy of Arts, Museet for Samtidskunst and ENSAD.
