This recognition is granted to organisations in the cultural sector that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices and to reducing the climate impact of their activities. This is the case of the Foundation, which has consolidated a cross-cutting sustainability strategy that integrates environmental criteria into its operations, cultural programming, outreach activities and investments.

Throughout 2025, the Foundation recorded significant progress in improving energy efficiency and reducing resource consumption. Key measures include the ongoing refurbishment of the Gulbenkian Museum, the installation of 1,850 solar panels and the replacement of auditorium lighting systems with LED technology, within a structured, long-term approach to decarbonisation.

The circular economy has also been a priority, with the adoption of measures aimed at reuse and extending the lifecycle of materials. In 2025, the Centre for Modern Art installed at the exhibition Xerazade: The CAM’s Endless Collection a modular, flexible and reusable system, with the aim of significantly reducing waste and costs associated with exhibition production.

Monitoring and reporting environmental indicators, including the institution’s carbon footprint, continue to be part of its transparency and accountability policy, with this information published annually in its Report and Accounts.

Sustainability has also shaped the Foundation’s cultural programme. In 2025, highlights included projects such as Ciguatera by Diana Policarpo – an immersive installation dedicated to ocean ecosystems –, participation in the European initiative Bauhaus of the Seas Sails, and the audio trail Natura Mirabilis: Art and Nature, which establishes dialogues between works from the Gulbenkian Collection and the biodiversity of the Gulbenkian Garden.

The Foundation continues to prioritise investments and support related to biodiversity protection, nature-based solutions and a just climate transition. Last year, it supported eight environmental organisations in Portugal, strengthened its work in water management in agriculture, and maintained impact investments in reforestation and ecosystem restoration projects.

The Gallery Climate Coalition is an international organisation working to make the art world environmentally responsible.
