Chorus in Rememory of Flight in Lisbon

Programme associated to the exhibition ‘Julianknxx. Chorus in Rememory of Flight’. Feb – May 2025

For the exhibition ‘Julianknxx. Chorus in Rememory of Flight’, we brought together a curatorial team who created a programme of events that echo the themes of colonial heritage, loss and belonging.

This programme, curated by Jesualdo Lopes, Paulo Pascoal, Rafael de Oliveira and Selma Uamusse, takes place between various spaces of the Gulbenkian Foundation and other locations in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area over three distinct phases: Past, Present, and Future.

In February and March, we look to the past to highlight individuals and collectives with significant archives related to Black art, such as Corsino Furtado, Tabanka Records, and Dentu Zona. Their collections of vinyl records and books will be loaned to Julianknxx’s exhibition and, in a later stage, will be showcased during National Museum Day.

April focuses on the Present and it includes a conversation featuring agents of cultural resistance in a gentrified city, and ‘ARUS FEMIA’, a theater show by Zia Soares. Bridging the Present and the Future, the Black Digital Archive invites Black visitors to the exhibition to document their existence through its first collection, entitled ‘Memories of a Present Future’.

In May, the Future is envisioned collectively: between a poetry session and a conversation, Círculo Poémia invites to ‘A Flight of Poetry and Conversation on Parenthood’; the artists Filipa Bossuet and Vânia Andrade Puma show a new performance; and Damara Inglês proposes a workshop on the metaverse.

During the final week of the exhibition, ‘Syncopations’ – a sonic fiction series inspired by Black women who lived in Lisbon in the early 20th century – takes over the Sound Room, proposing an imaginative leap into the future through the lens of the past.

The program culminates in a closing party at Dentu Zona, celebrating three months of intergenerational and intersectional gatherings, creative exchanges and community engagement.
