Researchers from several Portuguese and Brazilian universities have examined how artificial intelligence is being used by Portuguese news organisations. Over eight months of research, the team concluded that the national media ecosystem remains structurally unprepared for this new technology, and that information quality, audience protection and the sustainability of news organisations face significant challenges in a context marked by rising disinformation and the increasing presence of synthetic content.
The findings are presented in the White Paper on the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Journalism in Portugal, which not only maps the current landscape of Portuguese newsrooms but also sets out recommendations designed to encourage debate around new public policies and editorial strategies, promoting a transparent and responsible integration of AI across the sector.
Promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation through the European Media and Information Fund, and coordinated by NOVA FCSH – School of Social Sciences and Humanities, this initiative marks the first nationwide study assessing the adoption of AI in the Portuguese media.
