Bowing is a gesture of respect in Asian cultures. It is also the movement of the workers at the intensive farming greenhouses in the Alentejo Region, bent over the land. In contemporary dance, it is the curve of the spine to which Merce Cunningham refers.
The documentary Bowing – o ano da curva [Bowing – the year of the curve] focuses on all three dimensions when following the first year of the Bowing project, from the initial meeting in schools to the final performance of the show created with migrants, adults and children from Nepal, India, Bangladesh and China, who now work and live in the municipality of Odemira.
A group of artists, under the artistic direction of Madalena Victorino, works with this population and, amidst multiple misunderstandings and difficulties, weaves art into the days spent in the greenhouses, at school and in the streets.
