Conservative concerns about reproductive competition between individuals, social classes, and races is nothing new, despite the hype surrounding the so-called Great Replacement. Historians typically cast these episodes in terms of anti-immigrant nativism or nationalism. In this presentation, I will offer a different historical interpretation in terms of eugenic efforts to promote the selective reproduction of those considered the "most fit". This interpretation will link contemporary pronatalist efforts labelled "hipster eugenics" with earlier efforts to champion a four-child family norm.
