Mahler's Symphony No. 1

Gulbenkian Orchestra / Hannu Lintu / Karita Mattila

For many years, the Finnish soprano Karita Mattila resisted Wagner’s works. However, after playing Sieglinde in The Valkyrie and watching five hours of Götterdämmerung, she confessed to the New York Times that she had been completely won over by the German composer: “It was like a religious experience.” It is this transcendent relationship that Mattila brings to this concert with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, which is conducted by her compatriot Hannu Lintu. The soprano’s extraordinary reputation has been built on a tangential point between the lyrical beauty of her voice and the natural theatricality of her interpretations, which makes each performance an unforgettable experience.
