Scientific Report I: Assessment of blue carbon ecosystems in mainland Portugal

Digital edition

PDF – 684.3 KB

The first volume of the Gulbenkian Blue Carbon project’s scientific report – which precedes Scientific Report II: the 10 blue carbon ecosystems in mainland Portugal – contains the scientific research carried out from the north to the south of Portugal to map and characterise blue carbon ecosystems and makes recommendations on appropriate protection and restoration measures.

With this work, carried out in partnership with the Centre for Marine Sciences at the University of the Algarve, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation aims to highlight the potential of these ecosystems to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonising the economy in Portugal, as part of the fight against climate change, whilst providing co-benefits such as supporting biodiversity or improving water quality in coastal areas.

As part of the same project, view the publication Blue Carbon: Roadmap to a voluntary market in Portugal.
