Portugal Mais Velho
For a society where rights have no age
Report containing the main conclusions of the work carried out between January 2019 and June 2020, under the aegis of the Portugal Mais Velho (Ageing Portugal) project, which sought to identify the gaps in the public policies and in the legislation relating to the population’s ageing and the violence against the elderly.
Despite the increase in average life expectancy, the prospect of ageing aren’t the best: elderly people, even when active, are globally seen as fragile, sickly and dependent, which prompts/promotes phenomena of disrespect for their rights, exclusion, marginalisation, and, not rarely/infrequently/uncommonly, situations of crime and violence. The WHO estimates, in fact, that one in six people aged 60 or over is a victim of violence.
It was in this context that the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) proposed to develop, between January 2019 and June 2020, the project Portugal Mais Velho, seeking to identify the gaps in the public policies and in the legislation relating to the population’s ageing and the violence against the elderly. The present report, only available in Portuguese, gathers the main findings of this work.
