Parent Workshop
This experimental one-month course aims at developing parenting skills in families with disabled children. When the course ends the aim is to set up a network of parents, trainers and advisers capable of managing the disabled child’s integration process.
The course, which is being administered by the Higher Institute of Applied Psychology (ISPA), includes themes such as the process of adapting to the idea of having a disabled child, the rights of the disabled, independence and integration into active life and sexuality and disability. It is hoped that the experimental nature of the course, once completed and subsequently evaluated, will facilitate modification of the contents and other formal aspects with a view to establishing a flexible and innovative model for parent training.
The importance of initiatives of the kind has been highlighted by the High Commission for Health. The Parent Workshops are the result of cooperation between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the ISPA and the Pais em Rede association.
