Institute of Ageing

The Institute of Ageing, which was set up in the wake of the Gulbenkian Health Forum O Tempo da Vida (The Time of Life), was created with the aim of conducting studies and research projects in the field of ageing, promoting training and organising scientific communication activities for society in general.
This research unit is the result of a partnership between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon, where it is based. Its director is Manuel Villaverde Cabral.

At a time when the progressive and accentuated ageing of the population is already one of the striking characteristics of the Portuguese demographic structure, the Institute of Ageing will be organising, in its first year of existence, a colloquium on the subject and launching its first study on ageing in Portugal, which will be a retrospective and prospective demographic study.
National and international contacts aimed at consolidating the Institute are also planned, in particular with the Oxford Institute of Ageing, for which, in a later phase, our Institute will be granting post-doctoral scholarships.

In addition to the Gulbenkian Human Development Programme, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Education Service is also involved in this initiative.
