António Cruz Serra

Executive Trustee 2022 – 2027

António Cruz Serra was born in Coimbra in 1956. He is Trustee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation since 12 May 2022.

Tenured professor in Electronics at the Department of Electrotechnical Engineering and Computation at the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon, where he has lectured since 1978, he was Rector of the University of Lisbon (2013-2021), Rector of the Technical University of Lisbon (2012-2013), President of the Instituto Superior Técnico (2009-2012), Assistant President for Administrative Affairs at the Instituto Superior Técnico (2002-2008), a member of the Fusion for Energy Executive Committee (2007-2009), President of IMEKO – the International Measurement Confederation (2009-2012), President of the Board of Directors of Taguspark SA (2010-2014), President of the Consortium Linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research (2010-2012).

He was also a researcher in the Biomechanics Group of the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (1979-1981), researcher at the Centre of Electrotechnics, INIC (1982-1994) and researcher at the Institute of Telecommunications (since 1994).

He was a member of the evaluation panels for the scientific research projects in the field of Electronic Instrumentation, proposed for financing by the different programs within the European Union framework and the government agencies of Portugal, the Czech Republic, Italy and Poland.

Since 1993, he has lectured the Electronics subjects on the Weapons and Electronics study program at the Naval School.

He holds Doctoral (1992) and Master’s (1985) Degrees in Electrotechnical Engineering and Computation from the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon after graduating in Electrotechnical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Oporto (1978).

He has authored over two hundred scientific publications.
