Training Maths Teachers in Sao Tome and Principe
Secondary school maths teachers in Sao Tome and Principe participated in an intensive training program designed with the objective of strengthening the quality of teaching in this subject and of consequently improving the learning and development of students.
64 Sao Tome and Principe maths teachers – the entirety of maths teachers in the country – participated in this one-year training program that included both online and in-person sessions, training through peer tutoring and culminating in a week-long bootcamp that was attended by all the participating teachers.
This program counted on collaboration with members of the Portuguese Mathematics Society. In detail, the objectives included deepening the pedagogic competences and knowledge of teachers on structural facets of this subject and thereby improving the teaching of maths throughout the country.
The program was developed by the Directorate of Education Planning and Innovation of the Sao Tome and Principe Ministry of Education, with the support of the Gulbenkian Foundation, and targets the structured and progressive teaching of maths, approaching materials that enable, step by step, and both coherently and logically, the deepening of the solid acquisition of knowledge while also strengthening the capacities of students.
