Third edition of the Gulbenkian Mathematics Camps in Cape Verde
The third edition of this initiative will take place from September 4 to 8 in the city of Praia, for students from secondary schools on the Sotavento islands, and from September 11 to 15 in the city of Mindelo, for 11th grade students from secondary schools on the Barlavento islands who took part in the previous edition. In total, 72 students and 30 secondary school teachers will be involved.
The Gulbenkian Mathematics Camps bring together the best 10th grade students (with an average of more than 16 points) in a non-residential camp, with educational activities designed to stimulate interest in mathematics through its applications in solving everyday problems.
The aims of the initiative, which has been running since 2021, include developing curiosity and a taste for learning mathematics, fostering the joy of participating in class and working in groups, and developing logical, argumentative, and abstract reasoning, as well as comprehension, analysis, application and synthesis skills. Participants in the Camp will then be accompanied progressively throughout secondary school, until they enter higher education, promoting self-learning and the individual development of their mathematical abilities.
The Gulbenkian Mathematics Camps in Cape Verde are a project promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, organized and implemented by the University of Cape Verde, with the support of the Cape Verde Ministry of Education.
This initiative is part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s strategy to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in the PALOP countries, which includes the Vocations for Mathematics mentoring program and an increase in the number of postgraduate courses on offer in Cape Verde.
