Gulbenkian Foundation supports Cape Verde after Storm Erin

Of the total amount, €30,000 will be allocated to the Cape Verde Red Cross to strengthen its emergency response for the most vulnerable families. This response combines immediate assistance with measures to reinforce community resilience, including the provision of temporary shelter, food distribution, hygiene kits, and other essential needs.

In addition, the Foundation will make available up to €50,000 to the Dr. Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo, a long-standing partner in the “Onco-CV” project. The funding will support the replacement of essential hospital supplies, namely reagents, and help address the expected increase in demand for medical care resulting from the emergency situation.

The heavy rains and flooding caused by the storm directly affected around 27,500 people, cut off access to safe drinking water on São Vicente island for several days, and severely damaged the sanitation system, raising the risk of outbreaks of infectious diseases such as diarrheal illnesses, dengue, and respiratory diseases.

Through this intervention, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation seeks to contribute to the response to the damage caused by Tropical Storm Erin in Cape Verde and to support the recovery of the most affected communities.
