Earthshot Prize awarded to Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity jury member
Friendship, a Bangladeshi social-purpose organisation founded by Runa Khan, has been named one of the Earthshot Prize 2025 winners in the ‘Fix Our Climate’ category for its integrated model tackling climate vulnerability while delivering lasting improvements to ecosystems and communities.
Founded in 2002, Friendship is dedicated to helping vulnerable communities across Bangladesh not only prepare for natural disasters, but also supporting their health, education, livelihoods and access to public services. Today it reaches more than 7.5 million people each year with healthcare services, provides over 8.3 million days of emergency food support, and gives more than 80,000 people access to safe drinking water in coastal areas.
Runa Khan has been a Jury member of the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity since 2020 and has represented its mission through championing a holistic approach to climate action that benefits people as well as the planet.
Speaking of the win, Runa Khan said: “It is an immense honour for us to be the first from Bangladesh to receive the Earthshot Prize. This recognition celebrates the resilience and innovation of Bangladesh’s marginalised communities. Our achievement belongs to everyone, especially the people we work with and for. This award strengthens our commitment and responsibility to continue our mission with even greater passion.”
The 2026 Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity will open for nominations next week. The annual €1 million award recognises extraordinary leadership and proven climate approaches that benefit people and the planet, and supports winners to scale their vital work. Chaired by Angela Merkel, the Jury comprises internationally recognised climate experts including Runa Khan. The Foundation has awarded €6 million through the Prize since it was established in 2020 to help accelerate transformative climate action across the globe.
