Event Slider

The fifth visiting artwork of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum comes from the Frick Collection, in New York.

In this new iteration of the Visiting Artwork initiative, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum will receive one of the most significant paintings from the Frick Collection, in New York. It is a portrait of the Spanish monarch Philip IV, by Diego Velázquez.

In this painting, dating from 1644, the king is depicted in military garb, in commemoration of the Spanish army’s victory over the French troops during the reconquest of the Catalan city of Lérida. This work is one of the best representations of the close relationship forged between Philip IV and Velázquez, the Spanish court painter.
