The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a private institution whose main purpose is to improve people’s quality of life through art, charity, science, and education. The Foundation carries out its activities from its headquarters in Lisbon, and from its branches in Paris and London.

We are seeking a Stage Director to join the Central Department/Stage Support team, who will be responsible for ensuring the connection between the artistic component and the respective technical execution, while also planning all stages of the process, enforcing the required routines, allocating means, and monitoring the overall execution.

The Stage Director will also respond to the needs of each show or stage performance, namely by implementing the concept of the Theatre Director (if it is staged), or the Conductor (in case of a concert), by preparing plans and drawings with the different installations on stage, and by sharing all the information among the chosen technical teams.

Contractual conditions: Permanent employment contract.

Main Responsibilities

  • Prepare Riders and review Technical Riders.
  • Direct shows and performances, and prepare the respective scripts.
  • Manage the equipment kept on stage, namely keyboard musical instruments (pianos, organs, and harpsichords), requesting their respective tuning and maintenance.
  • Check the instruments required for a given concert, and provide for their maintenance and tuning according to the artist’s requirements. This service shall be requested from specialised professionals.
  • Promote weekly meetings with those responsible for the various sectors in order to plan and review all activities, while preparing the necessary documents to work as guides for the assembly work for each project.
  • Develop tables and maps for each project, according to the respective level of complexity, in order to ensure its completion.
  • Prepare plans and stage plans, in accordance with artistic and technical requirements, and share them with the stage team.
  • Prepare scene scripts using a musical score, when organising an opera or concert. 

Required Skills

  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in similar responsibilities. Broad experience in all performing areas, classical orchestra, opera, dance, theatre.
  • Graduate degree in Theatre, Stage and Performing Arts (Preferred). Musical training.
  • Proficiency in Portuguese / English / French (Preferred).
  • MS Office and IT drawing tools.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
